Einstein had a great effect on science
and history. An American university president once commented that Einstein had
created a new outlook, a new view of universe. It may be some time before the
average mind understands fully the identity of time and space and so on-but even
ordinary men understand now that the universe is something larger than ever
thought before. By 1914 the young Einstein had gained world fame. He accepted the offer to become a professor at the Prussian Academy of Science in Berlin. He had few duties, little teaching and unlimited opportunities for study, but soon his peace and quiet were broken by the First World War. Einstein hated violence. The misery of war affected him deeply, and he sat unhappy in his office doing little. He lost interest in his research. Only when peace came in 1918 was he able to get back to work. In the years following World War I honors were increasingly heaped on him. He became the head of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute of Theoretical Physics. In 1921 he won the Nobel Prize, and he was honored in Germany until the rise of Naziism when he was driven from Germany because he was a Jew. |
A.Einstein was forced to serve in the Germany army
B.Albert Einstein had no other interests besides science
C.Nazi didn’t like Jews
D.his reputation was ruined because of his work during World War I

Acting is such an over-crowded
profession that the only advice that should be given to a young person thinking
of going on the stage is "Don’t" ! But it is useless to try to discourage
someone who feels that he must act, although the chances of his becoming famous
are slim. The normal way to begin is to go to a drama school. Then the young
actor or actress takes up work with a theatrical company, usually as an
assistant stage manager. This means doing everything that there is to do in the
theatre: painting scenery, publicity (宣传 ), taking care of the costumes (舞台服装),
and even acting in very small parts. It is very hard work indeed. The hours are
long and the salary is tiny. Of course, some people have remarkable chances which lead to fame and success without this long and hard training. Connie Pratt, for example, was just an ordinary girl working in a bicycle factory. A film producer happened to catch sight of her one morning waiting at a bus stop, as he drove past in his car. He stopped and asked if she would like to go to the film studio to do a test, and she thought he was joking. It took the producer twenty minutes to convince Connie that he was serious. The test was successful. And within a few weeks she was playing the leading part opposite one of the most famous actors of the day. But chances like this happen once in a blue moon! |
A.this is a highly profitable chance
B.this is something highly possible
C.this is something which happens once in while
D.this is very rare chance
